Discovering Florence geared towards involving all family members of all ages.
1. Florence for families tour… a family focus in the discovery of Florence and the mysteries and magic of the people who ruled and where and how they lived
This walking tour is designed for all ages in the family but has particular focus on the younger generation. Amongst other things we visit Palazzo Davanzati (openings hours permitting), some renaissance palaces and the new market for some wish making. We hunt down the coats of arms of the ruling families dotted around the city, discover paintings and their hidden meanings, explore the artisans workshops (opening times permitting), discover the delights of Tuscan food and the miracles in the churches and the magic in the streets. A stop for gelato in a local favourite place is necessary for refuelling! This walking tour is always a hit with the families with children of all ages and interests.
Other museums which we think work well with families and we like to include in the family tour itinerary (other than the Palazzo Davanzati) are the Palazzo Vecchio (the medieval town hall and then the first ducal palace of the Medici family), the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi (where the Medici lived in the 1400s when one of the leading banking families in the city) and the Santa Croce church (tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo and other masterpieces). If you have a preference in visiting one of the above please let us know upon booking.
*If you would like to include the Accademia gallery (visiting the Michelangelo works only) into the itinerary¬†it is possible also. Please read the ‘More info’ section for important scheduling information.
*If you would like to enter the cathedral (duomo) on the tour and there are more than 4 people in your party please read the section on this in ‘More info’.
2. Fresco making activity… learn to make your own fresco with an expert art restorer
This is an ideal afternoon for families because it is an activity which is appreciated and enjoyed by both adults and children.
After doing this one can really feel that little bit closer to the great Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli and Raphael because you actually create your own fresco under the guidance of a professional expert artist in his workshop. This is a wonderful and unique experience which helps to really bring alive, and make all the more impressive, all those magnificent masterpieces one sees in the churches, museums and palaces of Florence.
You take your masterpiece home with you!
AGE RESTRICTIONS: from experience this activity is best when participants are 10years and older. It can also work with particularly mature children who are 8 and 9yrs of age.

Entering the cathedral (duomo)
In the busy season there are long queues to enter the cathedral.
Licensed guides have priority access and do not wait in the queue (all of the Freya’s Florence team have guide licenses) however, when with groups greater than 4people the cathedral management has ruled that to access the priority line it is necessary for each person to have individual headsets so that the guide doesn’t raise their voice in the church.
Freya‚Äôs Florence¬†will book the headsets¬†in advance and they will be distributed at the¬†beginning of the tour and used¬†for the entire tour (not only the cathedral). For parties of 10people and less the total cost for use on¬†a half¬†day tour¬†is 25‚ā¨ and for¬†a¬†full¬†day tour¬†is 45‚ā¨.
For parties greater than 10pax the cost of the headsets per person¬†is¬†2.50‚ā¨ for a half day tour and 4.50‚ā¨ for a full day tour.
Groups greater than 6 people will require headsets, necessary for most of the museums and recommended for city walks due to surrounding noise.
Freya‚Äôs Florence¬†will book these¬†in advance and they will be distributed at the¬†beginning of the tour and used¬†for the entire duration of the¬†tour. For parties of 10 people and less the total cost for¬†a half¬†day tour¬†is 25‚ā¨ or for¬†a¬†full¬†day tour¬†the cost is 45‚ā¨.
For parties greater than 10pax the cost of the headsets per person¬†is¬†2.50‚ā¨ for a half day tour and 4.50‚ā¨ per person for a full day tour.
Ticket reservations for Accademia gallery
If you are interested in including the Accademia gallery into the tour itinerary:
The Accademia gallery is closed on Mondays. It is not possible to make a reservation to avoid the long lines on the first Sunday of a month.
We make the ticket reservations ahead of time for the gallery if included in the tour itinerary.
We strongly recommend avoiding entering the Accademia gallery between 9am-5pm as it is extremely busy and queues accrue in the reservation area after 9am due to the numerous large groups and over ticket booking.
The Accademia opens at 8.15am and so we recommend entering between 8.15-9am. Or, we will organise an afternoon tour entering from 5pm (it closes at 6.30pm) and the tour will visit the gallery towards the end of the itinerary.
Tuesday is the busiest day of the week for both of galleries as they are closed on Monday. We strongly advise not including them in the tour itinerary on Tuesday. If necessary then we recommend entering no later than 8.30am.
Appropriate clothing for entering the churches during summer months:
Shoulders must be covered and skirts or shorts no higher than the top of the knee in churches.
Cancellations made less than 48hours prior to the tour start time require full payment.
Cancellations made within a week of your tour date will require half payment.
